AAA Minor and Major Bantam in District 8
On January 1, 2019, we provided you with some information on how Sudbury Minor Hockey would proceed with AAA Minor and Major Bantam this upcoming season.
We applied for Minor and Major Bantam AAA cards with the NOHA by the January 20 deadline.
The Vice President of Rep Hockey and the Executive Director attended an interview with the NOHA board on January 26 in North Bay to defend the reason for our application.
The NOHA supported our endeavour and provided a letter of support along with our application, to the OHF for final approval since they had a moratorium on all new AAA teams in the Province and it would be discussed at their meetings on the weekend of February 23-24, 2019.
On February 26th we received a letter from the NOHA on behalf of the OHF seeking additional information.
On March 4, the SMHA board held a special meeting to discuss how we would respond to this request.
At that meeting it was ultimately decided that we would remain status quo for this season and look to put the effort in to rebuilding our programs by developing our players in order to be able to offer true AAA programs to our players in the future.
What this means is that SMHA will not be hosting Minor or Major Bantam AAA teams. Anyone in those age groups that will be seeking a release must contact the SMHA office to obtain one. Your 2018-2019 season team will be contacted to ensure there are no outstanding financial obligations and if all clear, a release will be provided.
Please be aware, this will only be effective at the Minor and Major Bantam AAA age groups.
We appreciate your patience. In the end we feel this is the right decision for the players of SMHA.
Yours in Hockey,
Sudbury Minor Hockey Association
